General Rendering FAQ

Q: My motion blurred scene takes forever to render.
A: Try using 2D motion blur.

Q: The reflections looks out of place.
A: It may be a raytracing bias problem. When using the default raytracing bias of 0.0, the bias will be set to 1 / 100000 of the scene bounding box size. This will be a problem if the camera looks at small details in a large scene. To fix it, try setting a value on the raytracing bias manually.

Q: My Area Lights Flickers
A: Animation requires more shadow rays than a single render to avoid flickering between frames. (A single frame can look great but the animation will still flicker). Try using depth map shadows instead ray traced shadows.

Q: I can't find the render pass controls in Maya 7.0
A: The render passes are available on the render layer controls. These are accessed by right clicking on the render layer in the render layer list and selecting "Attributes...". The turtle render pass options should be available under the "render pass" tab.
